The Game
Our Blackjack game is based on the rules you will find in most casinos
in the United Kingdom. We use 4 decks of cards, shuffled and dealt from
a shoe. The object of the game is to reach a total with two or more cards
not exceeding 21. If the player's total is greater than that of the dealer
or if the dealer exceeds 21 then the player's bet is paid at 1:1 or even
money. If however the player's total exceeds 21 or is less than that of
the dealer then the player loses their bet. If both the player and the
dealer attain the same score then a Stand Off occurs and neither side
wins or loses. The dealer must draw on 16 and must stand on all totals
of 17 and above.
To Play the Game
The player must first place their bet in a betting box. The player may
play up to three hands. To place a bet the player selects a chip then
clicks on the betting box to place the selected chip in the box. To remove
a chip, PC users may "right-click" on the chip to remove it
from play. Mac users should click whilst holding the apple key to perform
this task. Once the bets have been placed the dealer will then deal two
cards to each hand in play and two cards to themselves one face up, one
face down. All cards are at face value with picture cards counting as
ten and aces either as 1 or 11. If the player's first two cards are an
ace with either a picture card or a ten then that hand has Blackjack and
will be paid at 3:2 unless the dealer also has Blackjack in which case
a Stand Off occurs. If the player does not have Blackjack then they can
continue to draw cards, one hand at a time from right to left in their
attempt to reach 21. Once the player has finished taking cards for their
hand(s), the dealer will then draw their own cards.
Note. If a player attains a score of 21 then they will not be allowed
to draw any further cards to that hand. Also if a player is paid Blackjack
before the dealers hand has been played, any funds paid to the player
will not be available for play until the current game in play has been
completed.
Player Options and Terminology
In certain situations the player may be given certain options. This section
explains those options and their terminology.
Hit
This is to draw an additional card to their hand.
Stand
This is to indicate that no more cards are to be taken on this hand.
Split
If the player receives two cards of the same value they may decide to
match their original bet and split the hand into two. Upon splitting a
card is given to the first hand, the player then plays that hand, then
a card is given to the second hand. The player may split each box into
a maximum of three hands.
Note. All like cards may be split although picture cards can only be split
with the same picture card. Split aces with a 10 or picture card will
count as 21, not as Blackjack.
Double Down
With their initial first two cards the player may choose to match their
original bet and receive only one additional card. Note. A player may
choose to double down after splitting hands if conditions allow.
Insurance / Even Money
If the player has a Blackjack and the dealer is showing an ace they have
the choice of either insuring their bet (up to half their original bet),
taking even money or not taking either option. Insurance is offered to
each eligible hand in turn from left to right. When offered insurance
the maximum insurance amount allowed for that hand will be automatically
placed. To amend the insurance amount simply right click on the stack
of chips to reduce the bet (mac users hold the apple key and click on
the chip stack). To add chips to the insurance bet select the chip value
from the chip selector and click inside the insurance box in the space
provided. The maximum insurance bet and the current insurance bet is displayed
in the top right of the insurance window. Once the insurance amount has
been selected click on the Continue button to automatically place the
bet on the table. To cancel the insurance bet simply click on the Cancel
button.
If the dealer gets Blackjack their insurance bet will be paid at 2:1
and their Blackjack bet will be a Stand Off. If the dealer does not get
Blackjack then their insurance bet will lose and their Blackjack bet will
be paid at 3:2. If the player decides to take the even money option then
their bet will be paid even money immediately and their cards removed
from play.
Note. Only player hands with Blackjack may take insurance or even money
against the dealer's ace.
Peeking
If the dealer has an ace or ten showing with their first two cards, after
handling all insurance bets (in the case of an ace showing) and before
any player cards are drawn, the dealer will check their down card to see
if they have made Blackjack. If the dealer has made Blackjack then the
card will be turned over and all bets will be settled. If the dealer has
not made Blackjack then the game will continue as normal.
Hard Total
If a hand does not contain an ace or contains an ace that must be counted
as 1, then this hand is known as a hard total.
Soft Total
If a hand contains an ace that can be used as either a 1 or 11, then this
hand is known as a soft total.
